Robinson, who rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown in the game, was asked about the team’s offensive improvement under new coordinator Scott Turner.
“It’s a different philosophy,” Robinson said. “We’re more balanced now, and we’re not just trying to force the ball down the field.”
Robinson’s comments were interpreted as a veiled criticism of Bieniemy, who was known for his pass-heavy play-calling.
“It’s clear that Brian is not a fan of the way Bieniemy called the offense,” said ESPN analyst Matt Bowen. “He’s suggesting that Turner is doing a better job of involving the running game.”
Bieniemy is currently the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs. He was a candidate for the Commanders’ head coaching job last year, but the team ultimately hired Ron Rivera.
Some critics have argued that Bieniemy’s lack of a head coaching job is due to his perceived arrogance and inability to relate to players. However, Robinson’s comments suggest that his offensive philosophy may also be a factor.
“It’s important for coaches to be able to adjust their schemes to fit the strengths of their players,” said former NFL head coach Herm Edwards. “If Bieniemy is unwilling or unable to do that, it could be a limiting factor for his career.”
The Commanders have won their last three games with Robinson leading the way on the ground. Turner has credited Robinson’s toughness and determination for the team’s recent success.
“Brian is a special player,” Turner said. “He’s a workhorse, and he’s always hungry for more.”
It remains to be seen whether Robinson’s comments will have any impact on Bieniemy’s future prospects. However, they do provide a glimpse into the dynamics of the Washington Commanders’ locker room and the importance of player-coach relationships in the NFL.
