Syrian Insurgents Are Inside Aleppo In A Major Setback For Assad As Government Forces Regroup

Rebel fighters launched a coordinated offensive on Aleppo on July 31st, targeting government positions in the northeastern and southeastern suburbs. After days of intense fighting, they managed to breach the city’s defenses and enter several districts, including Sukkari and Bustan al-Qasr.

“The regime has lost control of key areas,” said Abu Iyad, a rebel commander. “We are now fighting street by street and house by house.”

The Syrian government has acknowledged the rebel incursion and ordered its forces to regroup and counterattack. Government troops have been seen withdrawing from some areas and setting up new defense lines.

“We have faced a temporary setback, but we will not abandon Aleppo,” said a government spokesman. “Our forces are regrouping and will launch a full-scale offensive to retake the lost territories.”

Analysts believe that the rebel incursion into Aleppo is a significant development in the Syrian conflict. If the rebels can hold their ground and capture more territory, it could deal a major blow to the Assad regime.

“This is a major setback for Assad,” said Joshua Landis, director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma. “If the rebels can consolidate their gains, it could lead to the collapse of the regime.”

The outlook for the battle of Aleppo remains uncertain. Both sides are committed to fighting for control of the city, but it is unclear who will emerge victorious. The conflict is likely to continue for some time, with potentially devastating consequences for the city and its inhabitants.
