Alabama A&M University Mourns the Loss of Linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr.
Huntsville, AL – December 28, 2023 – Alabama A&M University (AAMU) has announced the passing of Medrick Burnett Jr., a redshirt sophomore linebacker on the university’s football team.
Cause of Death and Memorial Arrangements
The cause of Burnett’s death has not been disclosed by the university or his family. A memorial service will be held at the university’s Louis Crews Stadium on Friday, December 30, at 2:00 PM. The public is invited to attend.
Athletic Accomplishments and Character
Burnett was a key player for the Bulldogs, starting in all 12 games during the 2022 season. He recorded 39 tackles, six tackles for loss, and two interceptions. He was named to the All-SWAC Second Team for his performance.
“Medrick was a talented athlete and an exemplary student,” said AAMU head coach Connell Maynor. “He was a joy to coach, and he will be greatly missed.”
Community Impact
Burnett was also known for his work off the field. He was a mentor to youth in the Huntsville community and volunteered his time at a local Boys & Girls Club.
“Medrick was a positive role model for our young people,” said Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle. “He will be remembered for his kindness and his commitment to the community.”
