Despite throwing three interceptions in the first half, quarterback Brennan Armstrong recovered magnificently in the second half. He led three consecutive touchdown drives, including a 43-yard go-ahead touchdown pass to Keytaon Thompson with just 4:06 remaining. “I’m proud of Brennan for not getting discouraged,” said UVA head coach Tony Elliott. “He kept fighting.”
The UVA defensive line played a pivotal role in the comeback. After allowing 190 rushing yards in the first half, they held BC to just 76 in the second half. Defensive end George Pettaway recorded two sacks, while fellow end Mike Thornton had a game-ending interception. “Our defensive line stepped up,” said Pettaway. “We knew we had to get pressure.”
Special teams made several key contributions. Placekicker Brendan Farrell converted two field goals, including a 43-yarder in the fourth quarter. Return specialist Lavel Davis Jr. had a crucial 42-yard punt return that set up Armstrong’s second touchdown pass. “Special teams won us this game,” said Farrell.
Several young players stepped up for UVA. Freshman wide receiver Malachi Fields had a career-high 103 receiving yards and a touchdown. True freshman tight end Joshua Carty caught a key third-down pass in the game-winning drive. “Our young guys showed a lot of toughness,” said Elliott.
This comeback marks the second time this season that UVA has rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit for a win. The Cavaliers overcame a 14-point deficit against Georgia Tech earlier in the season. “We’re building a comeback culture here,” said Armstrong. “We never give up.”
The win improves UVA’s record to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in ACC play. The Cavaliers will look to continue their momentum next week when they host Miami (FL) at home.
