Huskers Sweep Omaha In Front Of Record Crowd

Nebraska opened the 2023 season with a dominant performance and a clean sweep against the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Mavericks in front of a record-breaking crowd at Hawks Field. The Huskers took game one 6-0 on Friday night, followed by a 13-2 rout in game two on Saturday afternoon, and completed the sweep with a 4-3 walk-off win in a thrilling game three on Sunday afternoon.

A Record-Breaking Crowd

The series against UNO was a special event for Nebraska baseball, as it marked the dedication of the new Hawks Field. The state-of-the-art facility boasts a capacity of 7,019 and features a variety of amenities including a club level and a concourse with a 360-degree view of the field. The dedication brought out a record crowd of 8,279 fans on Friday night, the largest crowd to ever attend a Nebraska baseball game.

The Huskers Dominate Game One

In game one, the Huskers’ pitching staff was dominant, led by a strong performance by junior starter Cade Povich. Povich threw 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and two walks while striking out nine batters. The Huskers offense also provided plenty of support, scoring six runs on 11 hits, including a home run by senior infielder Cam Chick.

Another Dominant Performance In Game Two

The Huskers continued their strong play in game two, scoring 13 runs on 15 hits against the UNO pitching staff. Senior outfielder Jaxon Hallmark led the way with a 3-for-5 performance, including a home run and three RBIs. Junior infielder Luke Roskam also had a strong game, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. The Huskers’ pitching staff was again solid, with sophomore starter Shay Schanaman allowing only one earned run in 5.0 innings of work.

A Thrilling Walk-Off Win In Game Three

In the series finale, the Huskers found themselves in a tough battle with the Mavericks. UNO took an early 3-0 lead, but the Huskers fought back to tie the game in the fifth inning. The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth inning, when the Huskers’ junior infielder Max Anderson hit a walk-off single to give the Huskers the 4-3 win.

Looking Ahead

The Huskers’ sweep of UNO was a great start to the 2023 season. The Huskers will look to continue their strong play next weekend when they host the Creighton Bluejays in a three-game series at Hawks Field.

If the Huskers can continue to play at a high level, they will be a contender for the Big Ten championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
