MSU Basketball Falls To Kansas In The Champions Classic: 3 Quick Takes
Spartans Struggle From The Field
Michigan State shot just 38.3% from the field, including a dismal 22.2% from three-point range. The Spartans were also outrebounded by Kansas, 44-31.
“We didn’t shoot the ball well tonight,” head coach Tom Izzo said. “We got some good looks, but we just didn’t knock them down.”
Kansas Dominates Inside
The Jayhawks had a significant advantage in the paint, scoring 30 points to the Spartans’ 16. Wilson was a force inside, scoring 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
“We knew they were going to try to attack the paint,” Izzo said. “But we didn’t do a good enough job of defending them.”
Spartans Show Promise Despite Loss
Despite the loss, Izzo was encouraged by his team’s effort. The Spartans never gave up and played hard until the end.
“I’m proud of my guys,” Izzo said. “We showed a lot of heart and determination. We’ll learn from this and get better.”
Michigan State will look to bounce back on Friday when they host Oakland in their home opener.
